28 Oct Thank you for sharing Christmas blessings with Marquita!
“I’m inspired and motivated. I’ve become the best mother I can be.”
Marquita’s parents didn’t have the skills to help their deaf child navigate life. “They couldn’t use sign language and were frustrated and sad because we couldn’t communicate well,” she says.
When Marquita left home, she had disability income, but no life skills or sense of direction. She was already struggling to take care of herself when she had a child of her own. “Now, I was a deaf mom with even more responsibilities.”
Eventually, Marquita lost her apartment and she and her son wound up moving from shelter to shelter…one frightening experience to another. “I had no way to communicate our needs, and I was afraid someone might take advantage of us,” Marquita says.
She wanted to give her son a better life, but she had to find someone who could understand her needs. At an expo for the deaf, she met a godly man who directed her to Lydia House, our shelter for women and children. “We were so grateful for a safe place to stay and the loving, supportive staff.”
Through Bible studies and faith-based classes, Marquita’s relationship with the Lord has grown strong, and her heart has begun to heal from a lifetime of feeling like an outcast. “I taught the other moms a little bit of sign language and enjoyed fellowship with them,” Marquita says. “We’ve been learning about God, sharing how He has touched our lives and laughing together.”
Marquita has also developed the life skills and confidence she needs to live a stable life. After she completes our New Life Program, she plans to find a job and a safe place to live, then go to college. “I’m inspired and motivated. I know I can be successful and I’m going to do it for my son.”
“I have a whole new life.”
This Christmas, Marquita and her son are experiencing the gifts of peace and hope for a brighter future. Thank you for sharing the blessings of God’s love with them! “The Mission helped me become the best mother I can be.”
